Ecological Appraisal Summary, Planting & Landscaping Plan plus Nature Pond

This page provides the following information:

  • Ecological Appraisal Summary produced prior to planning application.
  • Summary of plans for planting, landscaping and nature pond.

As with all planning it should be noted that some elements mentioned are subject to change.

Ecological Appraisal Summary

Watnall Site

Hedgerow facing Main Road

The hedgerow facing main road forming a boundary to the west (marked as H2 on the map above) is considered to have ‘low’ nature conservation value (HEGS score 4).

Habitats

Following the National Planning Policy Framework 2012 (NPPF), development should look to increase the level of biodiversity on site with a focus on improvements to ecological networks and linkages where possible.

Hedgerows

Where hedgerow loss occurs, it is recommended that new species rich, native hedgerow is planted. This includes filling gaps or strengthening of retained hedgerows, designed to enhance existing habitat corridors. Following these guidelines can minimise proposed hedgerow losses or even result in net gain.

Fauna

To ensure compliance with the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, it is recommended that vegetation clearance is completed outside of the nesting season (March – August).

If clearance works are not possible during this period, such works will only start after a pre-clearance nesting bird check by a qualified ecologist. Should this survey identify active nests these will be retained and suitably buffered from disturbance until the young birds have fledged.

Biodiversity Enhancements

Where possible consideration should be given to the provision of a range of birds and bat boxes across the site. These may be positioned on suitable retained trees, or on new buildings.

Planting & Landscaping Plan

The landscape plan will introduce over 1900 trees, 1200 shrubs and 218 Herbaceous plants to the site.

A mix of trees and shrubs to be planted including varieties such as Field Maple, Common Hawthorn and Rosemary among many others. See link further down this page that provides a full list of species.

Initial landscaping will be carried out with ongoing maintenance once development is complete. Other elements of landscaping include:

  • Grassed areas including meadowland grasses
  • Meadowland grasses to the rear of the premises.
  • Native hedgerows
  • Woodland screening
  • Frontage screened by hedgerow and trees
  • Car park set back and screened by trees
  • Bird and bat boxes across the site

Nature Pond

A ‘Nature’ pond will replace the attenuation pond initially proposed. While no longer mandatory, we have briefed our construction partner to proceed with development. This feature can help promote biodiversity and attract wildlife.
